Mitochondria have emerged as much more than energy-providing organelles, being implicated also in regulation of cell death, inflammation, and oxidative stress. In this session, we will highlight recent findings where mitochondria promote inflammation and autoimmunity in rheumatic disease.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recall the various functions mitochondria partake in to regulate homeostasis
  • Describe how mitochondrial RNA and DNA may be sensed and cause inflammation and autoimmunity
  • List sources of extracellular mitochondria in autoimmune conditions
