This session aims to share strategies for delivering rheumatology care in the face of a significant shortage of rheumatologists. Solutions include: (1) better equipping primary care doctors to initiate the work up for common rheumatic diseases and provide initial management while patients await consultation appointments with rheumatologists – enter the ACR’s rheumforprimarycare.org resource; (2) improve referral quality and processes through triage and E-consult services to alleviate the burden caused by misdirected referrals so that critical patients can be seen sooner; and (3) providing rheumatology patients with self-management strategies that can alleviate the burden of low-yield patient contact between visits while simultaneously ensuring patients do reach out quickly and effectively when input from their rheumatologist is crucial.
