Wolfgang Schmidt, born and educated in Berlin, Germany, holds degrees in internal and emergency medicine. He became a senior physician at Immanuel Krankenhaus Berlin in 1993 and obtained his rheumatology degree in 1996. From 2005 to 2023, he served as deputy director and rheumatology fellowship director at this hospital. He is now a senior consultant in the rheumatology department of Waldfriede Hospital in Berlin. In 2023, he was designated an ACR Master. Wolfgang Schmidt led musculoskeletal ultrasound workshops at annual ACR meetings from 1999 to 2009 and organized several EULAR ultrasound courses since 2002, including initiating the EULAR Ultrasound Trainer Courses in 2012. His research focuses on musculoskeletal ultrasound and vasculitis imaging. He completed his habilitation in 2002 and was appointed professor of Charité University Medicine in Berlin in 2010. He pioneered the ultrasound halo sign in GCA (Lancet, 1995), published the first ultrasound study in GCA (NEJM, 1997), and introduced the first ultrasound-based GCA fast-track clinic in the late 1990s, seeing 90-100 new GCA patients annually. He guides international vasculitis imaging recommendations, heads the OMERACT vasculitis ultrasound group, and leads phase 2 and 3 GCA and PMR trials.
