Dr. Joy Buie is a seasoned professional with a rich background in academic research and a passionate commitment to the non-profit sector. Joy’s journey began with a deep interest in the etiology of autoimmune disease, leading her to pursue a Ph.D. in Immunology from The Medical University of South Carolina. During her academic tenure, she focused on studying the role of epigenetics in endothelial and vascular dysfunction across various diseases, leading to several publications. After completing her training, Joy made a deliberate transition into conducting clinical research and eventually perusing additional training in nursing school as part of an NIH K22 training program funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disease and Stroke. Joy made the decision to transition to the non-profit world, driven by her desire to directly apply her research to health disparities and health equity efforts in systemic lupus erythematosus. She joined The Lupus Foundation of America, a leading volunteer health organization, where she initially served as the Associate Director of Research and steadily rose through the ranks at the Lupus Foundation of America eventually assuming the role of Vice President of Research. In this capacity, she oversees the implementation of large-scale access to care, drug development and clinical care focused research programs. She is also responsible for cultivating strategic partnerships with government agencies and other non-profit organizations.
