Dr. Lauren Covert is a pediatric rheumatologist at Duke University. She attended Duke University for her undergraduate degree in Biology and Visual Art and worked in Washington, DC in healthcare technology marketing before attending medical school at Georgetown University. She completed combined Internal Medicine & Pediatrics residency at University of California, San Diego and is board certified in both specialties. She is interested in rare, complex, systemic diseases that require ongoing care from childhood to adulthood. She is currently an Assistant Professor conducting basic and translational research on the pathophysiology of and potential therapies for inflammatory myopathies such as Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM) with the overarching goal of defining new, more precise, and less toxic therapeutic options. She works with bioengineered human tissue models to investigate disease mechanisms of JDM and develop a tool for preclinical drug development and testing.
