Dr Wechalekar is an academic rheumatologist in the Department of Rheumatology, Flinders Medical Centre, Adelaide, and Associate Professor at the Flinders University of South Australia. Dr Wechalekar heads the rheumatology research laboratory and synovial tissue biobank, and its research staff, based at the Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide. He has expertise in performing arthroscopic synovial biopsies and in synovial biopsy analyses. His areas of interest are disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis and synovial membrane pathology in early RA and synovial changes in health and disease. Dr Wechalekar's work has fostered several national and international collaborations, book chapters and journal publications. Dr Wechalekar is the co-chair of the OMERACT Synovial Tissue Special Interest Group, a member of the steering committee of the A3BC (Australian Arthritis and Autoimmune Biobank), and a recipient of the Flinders University Vice-Chancellor's Early Career Researcher Award, and the Australian Rheumatology Association's Mid-Career Research Award.
