Dr. Muriel Vélez Arteaga is a medical doctor and Ph.D. student committed to integrating clinical practice with scientific research. She earned her medical degree at Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador, where she also participated in clinical research in pediatric rheumatology, infectious diseases, and cardiovascular medicine.
Her passion for immunology, particularly Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), led her to join the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research in 2023 under the mentorship of Dr. Betty Diamond. As a Ph.D. student, her research focuses on B cell dysregulation in SLE, with a particular emphasis on nuclear antigens and their role in tolerance breakdown during B cell differentiation. Through this work, she seeks to clarify mechanisms of lupus pathogenesis.
