This session was submitted on behalf of the ACR Committee on Research. The goal of this session is to provide an update on evidence-based lifestyle interventions that can be used alongside disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and other rheumatic diseases.

Learning Objectives:

  • Introduce the concept of lifestyle medicine.
  • Discuss the role of exercise and physical activity interventions such as strength training, interval training, and virtual exercise in the clinical management of rheumatic disease
  • Identify the mechanisms by which stress induces inflammation and impacts rheumatic disease, and learn evidence-based stress mitigating techniques to reduce inflammation
  • Describe the features of a plant-based, whole food diet, as well as the major findings from a randomized controlled trial testing that diet in rheumatoid arthritis
