This session will introduce practicing rheumatologists to the transformative potential and the pitfalls of artificial intelligence and specifically large language models (LLMs) for routine clinical tasks. Attendees will learn of different techniques to optimize their use of LLMs, including prompt engineering, chain-of-thought prompting, few-shot-learning, and retrieval-augmented generation for day-to day documentation activities, such as drafting prior authorization requests, writing medical appeal letters, and generating patient-friendly education materials in different languages. The session will look at both advantages and disadvantages to utilizing AI in the form of a debate where one speaker will speak to the pros and the other speaker will address the challenges, or cons, to AI in the clinical setting.
Speaker: Jeffrey R. Curtis, MD, MS, MPH – University of Alabama at Birmingham
