Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) has created a robust educational ecosystem to empower patients and community members in managing musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoporosis. This ecosystem prioritizes self-efficacy, providing these individuals with the tools and confidence to take control of their health. HSS offers evidence-based physical activity programs like Tai Chi for arthritis, as well as Yoga and promising practices such as Pilates. These are delivered through live virtual classes, and on-demand videos, providing practical strategies for injury prevention and MSK health management. These programs are designed to be accessible, featuring low-cost options and a user-friendly digital platform, ensuring accessibility across diverse backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, and technical literacy levels.
Collaborating with community-based organizations, HSS also delivers culturally tailored programs with bilingual instructors, reaching underserved and medically underserved populations. These partnerships enhance access to care and create pathways for community members to become patients. Implementation of evidence-based programs like Tai Chi for arthritis and the AEA Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program, recognized by the CDC, address cultural and linguistic barriers while fostering engagement in MSK health. To ensure cultural relevance and sustainability, HSS employs the Community- Based Participatory Research (CBPR) model. Using a mixed-method approach guided by the RE-AIM framework, we systematically evaluate program reach and effectiveness ensuring equitable access and meaningful outcomes for diverse populations. By integrating evidence-based interventions across virtual and community- based settings, HSS takes a holistic approach to enhancing self-efficacy, advancing MSK health, and reducing disparities.
