Many aspire to be master clinicians, with the ability to solve any medical mystery and earn the respect and admiration of our patients and colleagues, but there are few practical ways in which to learn these skills. The book “Masterclass in Medicine: Lessons from the Experts” brought together talented and renowned physicians from across the globe to discuss important topics related to clinical excellence. Medical students, physicians in training, and other healthcare professionals will gain knowledge from the stories of what these master clinicians have learned from their patients and colleagues starting early in their careers, thereby providing a foundation for how to achieve greatness as a clinician. This panel discussion will interview several authors from the book, focusing on the following topics: uncertainty, making mistakes, diagnostic reasoning, and empathy. In exploring the early career experiences and habits of these master clinicians, we will provide a basis by which junior doctors and students can identify practices that can be cultivated over the course of their careers to achieve true mastery of medicine.
