Consensus Treatment Plans (CTPs) were created by stakeholders of the Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance (CARRA), with the aim of reducing treatment variability and promoting the conduct of comparative effectiveness research (CER) utilizing the CARRA Registry, the largest registry of pediatric rheumatic conditions in North America. In November 2021, CARRA created a multi-stakeholder Consensus Treatment Plan Task Force, including pediatric rheumatology providers, research coordinators, parents, and implementation scientists. The task force was charged with assessing the implementation of the existing CARRA polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) CTP and making recommendations for improvement and expansion to the entire CARRA CTP program. In this session, we will explore: 1) the historical rationale that led to the development of the CARRA CTP program as well as an assessment of the critical importance of CTPs in advancing pediatric rheumatology research, 2) the core theoretical approaches and methods underlying the field of implementation science, with a focus on driving clinical practice change in the real world using guidance from CTPs, and 3) a case study applying implementation science methodologies to assess barriers and facilitators to widespread use of the polyarticular JIA CTP and exploring recommendations for change. This session will increase awareness and knowledge of implementation science approaches among pediatric rheumatologists and provide real-world experience and suggestions to implement practice change promoting clinical research for the busy clinician.
