The second session in the Immunology Boot Camp series is an introduction to the basics of immunology for healthcare professionals and will expand participants’ knowledge of rheumatic diseases and treatment. This boot camp will provide a basic framework to grasp the pathophysiology of autoimmunity, or when “good cells go bad.” Faculty will describe in detail the mechanisms of autoimmunity and the subsequent inflammatory response that drives various rheumatic conditions. They will review clinical decision-making through case studies of connective tissue and inflammatory autoimmune conditions. This boot camp-style talk will close by reviewing the protein and cellular components of the acute inflammatory response to introduce the concepts of cytokines as therapeutic targets for arthritis and other inflammatory diseases.
Speaker: Troy Torgerson, MD, PhD – Allen Institute for Immunology
