This 60-minute interactive session will review a variety of more common modalities ranging from the traditional (ice, heat, paraffin wax bath, ultrasound, transcutaneous electrical stimulation) to the latest devices (including high power laser therapy and extracorporeal shockwave therapy) used to address pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We will look at how each modality purports to work, available evidence, clinical considerations (patient and clinician preferences, feasibility, costs, safety) and discuss why different international clinical practice guidelines on non-pharmacological management of OA and RA differ in their recommendations for/against each of these modalities. Audience participation will be facilitated through conference-enabled audience response platform. We will end the session with a moderated Q and A session.
