This interactive session will review a variety of more common electrophysical agents (EPAs), ranging from the traditional (ice, heat, paraffin wax bath, ultrasound, transcutaneous electrical stimulation) to the latest devices (including high power laser therapy, extracorporeal shockwave therapy, and photobiomodulation), used to address pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We will look at how each EPA purports to work, available evidence, and clinical considerations (patient and clinician preferences, feasibility, costs, safety), and discuss why different international practice guidelines on non-pharmacological management of OA and RA differ in their recommendations for/against each of these modalities. We will also explore the literature on patient views and any preferences for these more passive treatment approaches to better understand where they fit into individuals’ overall self-management plan for their arthritis. A look into what ChatGPT and "Dr. Google" say about each EPA will be included, as these are tools often used by patients to seek information and guidance on treatment approaches. Audience participation will be facilitated through Kahoot! or a similar conference-enabled platform. We will end the session with a moderated Q&A session.
