Dr. Maria Teves is an Assistant Professor in the School of Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she leads innovative research in molecular and cellular biology. With a strong focus on primary cilia, her work explores their critical role in the pathophysiology of systemic sclerosis (SSc), a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by fibrosis of the skin and internal organs. Dr. Teves' research aims to uncover the molecular mechanisms by which cilia contribute to fibrotic processes and disease progression in SSc, with the long-term goal of identifying new therapeutic targets. Her expertise spans ciliogenesis, cellular signaling pathways, genetically engineered murine models, and advanced microscopy techniques. Through her interdisciplinary approach, Dr. Teves is advancing our understanding of how cellular structures like cilia influence tissue remodeling and autoimmune disease, driving the field closer to potential interventions for fibrotic disorders. In addition to her research, Dr. Teves is dedicated to mentoring students and fostering collaborations to translate basic science into clinical solutions.
