Laura Hernandez is a third-year undergraduate student at the University of California, Los Angeles, majoring in Astrophysics with a strong research focus on lupus epidemiology. After being diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in 2021, she became deeply motivated to explore the environmental and epidemiological factors that influence autoimmune disease outcomes. Under the mentorship of Dr. Ram Singh at UCLA, she has contributed to research analyzing CDC mortality data to assess whether lupus patients experienced disproportionate mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her work highlights disparities across race, sex, age, and geography, with the goal of informing future public health strategies for autoimmune diseases.
